Mary E. Miller founded Lafayette in 1888 and named it for her late husband, Lafayette Miller. It incorporated on April 2, 1889 and grew as a coal-mining town.

Today about 30,000 people live here, with Old Town on Public Road, Waneka Lake Park on the north side of town, and Boulder Valley schools across the whole city.

Old Town on Public Road

Old Town Lafayette centers on Public Road and Festival Plaza. The Lafayette History Museum, an 1890s miner’s cottage at 108 E. Simpson Street, is a good first stop.

The lake and the trail

Waneka Lake Park, at 1600 Caria Drive, has a loop trail with a mountain view. The Bob L. Burger Recreation Center is on Baseline Road, and the 14-mile Coal Creek Trail runs through town between Superior and Erie.
